Every week in Grand Haven Michigan they hold this event called "Worship on the Water". Every week they have different christian bands and artist to hold simply a giant worship service. We happened to be there the Day Building 429 was there and I could not have been happier they were there.
The lead singer, Jason, Was not only super talented, but his message was incredible. Talking about how nothing will make you happy like God will. Not the fame we chase, the money we pine so hard to earn. Nothing on this Earth will ever be enough because God is what we need and all we will ever need.
This venu was packed, people everywhere on the bleachers and in lawn seats and standing around to hear the music and hear the word of God. Its unbelievable we live in a place where we can worship so freely and comfortably.
I could have tied this all into my Grand Haven Post but I thought this was all to impactful itself to just slide it in there. Seeing so many hands raised, and love felt everywhere. It was an amazing experience that Im so thankful I got to see and be a part of.
Freshman year of college is one of the weirdest yet most exhilarating times in your life. You get the little taste of freedom, and lessons learned all while still being, well, the baby.
1. You're so stinking young.
Though you feel all grown up and independent, there is still so much time to decide how you want to spend your life, and who to spend your life with. Nothing is set in stone. I see so many people my age, and double my age working their tails off.
2. Hard-work is NOT optional.
Elementary school prepped you for middle school, middle school prepped you for high school, high school prepped you (Or tried to) for college, college is prepping you how to learn, how to work your rear end off and do something for you and not because Its a handout or required my the government.
3-High School was NOT what is was all cracked up to be.
Once I graduated and encountered real people doing real things you realize how petty a lot of high school relationships are. High School is a hormonal mess of burned hair, tight clothes and mom and dad's gas money.
4. CHILL OUT
You often get hung up on the idea of having to be perfect, and all your grades need to be top notch. And for some people thats fine. Its not for me. My sanity is my priority over staying up until the sunrise completing random extra assignments that aren't going to help you anyway. So chill out, carve out special time in a day on the weekend to get as much work as you can before losing your mind. You can probably get more done than you actually think.
5. Music is a friend.
One of my survival tips would to be create or find a few different playlists. I like to have a chill one for evenings or morning for doing homework, and a jam out one to listen to on the way to school and and on the way home to keep in a good mood.
Self explanatory kids.
7. Get a hobby
In college you are constantly being told what do, even if you are in your major. On top of that you're probably working which can be a drag. Find something that can be your release, whether thats writing, running a blog, learning to play tennis, or video games. Find something that allows you to relax and not think about that essay that is due in 5 days and 14 hours.
8. NOT. EVERYONE. AGREES. WITH. YOU.
AND THATS OKAY. Our life purpose is not to hate everyone for having opinions. Now if you have seen my facebook you know I can be pretty opinionated, but Its pretty obvious so many people disagree with me. Even professors, scratch that. ESPECIALLY professors. Better learn now to suck it up and get over it. (But don't lose your opinion somewhere in the mess)
9. Rethink playing hookie.
"Wait.. you mean you actually have to show up to learn and do well in the class?!" Surprise!!!
10. Trust God.
Because through it all, your just as defenseless as the kid next to you. You will make it out, have faith, and pray.
Isaiah 41:10 "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. "
Isaiah 12:2 "2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my defense ; he has become my salvation.”
This is a verse that speaks absolute volumes to me for a million reasons. But as a teenager, and quickly coming to the end of my teen years, I, as almost everyone my age, has had this weight of responsibility set, or rather dropped onto my shoulders.
Not one specific person, not society (Which seems to be our quick blame for everything), not a job. But just growing and gaining so much knowledge about the world around me. From the War in the middle east, to the tension here in America, from this notion that I have to be graceful, and beautiful, and kind, and put together at all cost. I put it on myself and this bible verse clearly states that is not needed. That God is our SALVATION. He is the boat that is carrying us to shore no matter how many waves, storms, or sharks there are in the waters. We don't have to, and we shouldn't lean unto our selves.
We live in a time where everyone feels emotionally attacked by everything and I can be the same way. I can take offense to things that have absolutely no connection to me, yet somewhere in me I build up a wall. But God doesn't want that. He is our support, and our strong hold that, I feel, so many of us often forget and let our own selves try to run to world and figure it out on our own.
We have a God that tells us to NOT be afraid. How can we live such defensive and even offensive lives when every single day we have such a powerful, and good thing to live for. A love of God, and Love for those around us.
Maybe Im talking to myself. Maybe others relate. Either way, God is our Salvation. Our hope. God is God.. and thats pretty astonishing.
I have been seeing a lot of people saying "I am so blessed with...." and they filled that in with t.v shows, movies, shoes, and it goes on. Don't get me wrong I appreciate my t.v shows, and movies and what not ,but being Blessed is so much more than artificial, temporary things.
The t.v show will come to an end, The movie will eventually roll the credits, the shoes will wear out, the netflix subscription will be up. God has blessed us with so much more than materials and silly things.
Family. My mom, dad, older brother, younger brother, my cousins, and even some them, new spouses. Grandparents, whether they are with me, or in heaven. Aunts, uncles, Families that are not family by blood but I know I could go to them with anything at any time like my own family.
Love. Not like "Oh my word I LOVE that lipstick," But more like the Love, "As a person you are wonderful and I love you."
And Experiences. The times we've learned lessons, Good ones and bad ones. This year especially for me has been a bit of a rollercoaster. Making friends, losing friends, Falling in Love, then crashing out of it. I have been blessed with day after day In Gods love to experience so many different life lessons, and other silly things. And that to me makes netflix less substantial, the heals I had to have less special, and even my make up unnecessary.
I am thankful for everything I have, but I am Blessed by God with my family, love, and experiences.
