Back in March after a Charlie Puth concert, I got to briefly meet Tyler Zarzeka. Zarzeka is currently playing the drums in Charlie's band. So I have been lucky enough to ask Tyler some questions about his career in drumming, and about him. Here is what he had to say.
(AD) When and how did drumming start for you?
(TZ) "I started drumming very very late in life. At least compared to every other drummer I've EVER met. hah. I started when i was 16 by drumming on notebooks and binders before school with the first pair of drum sticks my dad gave me. He said if after a year i still wanted to play drums, he would buy me a set. So in November of 2003 i got my first kit. Still have it. So its now been 13 years and still love it as much as i did when i was 16. But the REASON i started drumming was of course Travis Barker. Saw Blink play live and knew that day, i wanted to play in front of thousands of people on tour. And now, here i am..."
(AD) What's the first song you learned to play on the drums?
(TZ) " "Ben" by FenixTX. It was a cover for one of the first bands I was in. Very straight forward pop punk song. "
(AD) What's an instrument you would like to learn to play?
(TZ) "I would love to play the violin. And or piano. We were required to learn scales on piano in music school, but never took it further besides learning a Coldplay song or two. Haha "
(AD) Who are some of your biggest influences and why?
(TZ) "Definitely my mom and dad. They're the reason I'm doing music. Not because they're musicians, far from it. But because they pushed me to pursue my dreams.
(AD) What are some of your favorite cities you've been to while on tour?
(TZ) "Hmmm, this is a tough one because every city has its perks. But I do love visiting London, the British culture is right up my alley. And can't go wrong with NYC, Paris, and Dubai. "
(AD) What's your next big project and how are you preparing?
(TZ) "That's a really good question. I tend to work for multiple artists at the same time but since Charlie is keeping me so busy, I have no time for anything else. I estimate that in 2017 I will have some downtime and will start to work more on drum videos for YouTube content."
(AD) And when you're not drumming or working on music what do you like to do?
(TZ) "I love going to the movies. There's something amazing about sitting in a dark theatre and for 2 hours get lost with your imagination and forget about the "outside" world. I could easily go to 3 movies a week with my best friend Keith, when I'm home of course."
(AD) Favorite song to sing in the car?
(TZ) " "Is it any wonder" by Keane "
(AD) If you could be anyone for a day who would it be?
(TZ) "Elon Musk"
(AD) Favorite food?
(TZ) "Mexican Food"
(AD) Favorite thing to watch on tv?
(TZ) "Cosmos "
